Never dry and i always put a conditioner on the hair i am going to bleach or color as a protectant, plus it helps to fill the pourous parts of the hair.
You have to use a rat tail comb to divide the hair in sections.

I use to have to do it every 10 days on my hair because i was platinum blond.
But my natural shade is black.
Its probaly worth it for you in time and product to just go to a professional.
Much easier if someone else is standing above you, plus timing is everything and everyone is different.
